This decline was primarily driven by a sustained rise in exports, particularly of almonds and walnuts, which redirected a significant portion of the national production overseas. The sector's focus on external markets was underscored by a self-sufficiency rate reaching approximately 140%, even as continued investments in technology aimed to solidify Portugal's position as a competitive global supplier.

The market rebounded strongly in 2023, with volume jumping to 82.5 thousand tons. This recovery was fueled by a substantial increase in production, which reached 107.8 thousand tons, the highest level recorded in the observed period.
