Earlier Report Observations

The Portuguese grape market volume grew from 833 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 895 thousand tonnes in 2019, supported by regulatory harmonization with EU legislation and sector-wide support policies, despite challenges from grape diseases like mildew and scorch. Market size stabilized around 884 thousand tonnes in 2020 as administrative measures such as electronic harvest declarations and domestic wine promotion campaigns were rolled out.

A significant surge to over 1 million tonnes occurred in 2021, driven by the continued national viticulture support program and vineyard restructuring schemes (VITIS), which enhanced productivity. This growth was interrupted in 2022 when severe drought conditions reduced the harvest, pulling market volume down to 942 thousand tonnes.

The market rebounded to 1.03 million tonnes in 2023, fueled by the expanding production and commercialization of seedless grape varieties and experimental flavors like cotton candy, notably from major producers such as Herdade Vale da Rosa. Concurrently, strengthened international promotion of Portuguese wines and updated rules for vineyard conversion under the CAP strategic plan provided further impetus for the sector.
