The Italian treenuts market volume in physical terms experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 483.2 thousand tons in 2020, consumption fell to 400.1 thousand tons in 2021 before recovering to 477.6 thousand tons in 2023. The market value followed a similar pattern, declining to 2.68 billion dollars in 2021 and then rising to 3.08 billion dollars by 2023.

In 2023, the European Union adopted Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2429, making the indication of origin mandatory for shelled or dried nuts from January 2025. This regulatory change, aimed at increasing market transparency and traceability, was designed to support Italian product quality and inform consumer choices in the nuts sector.

After two years of decline, Italy's treenuts production rebounded in 2020, reaching 290.5 K t, a 26.0% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 2.8%, averaging 0.9% annually. The lowest production level was in 2019 at 230.5 K t, which saw the largest decline of 10.6%.
