Earlier Report Observations

The treenuts market volume in Central Asia increased from 124.2 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 163.5 thousand tonnes in 2019. This surge was largely driven by rising imports into Russia, which compensated for restrictions stemming from sanctions and logistical disruptions. In the initial year, the market was constrained by a shortage of quality planting material, slowing the recovery of local nut production.

Market volume declined to 149.3 thousand tonnes in 2020 due to logistical problems and sanctions that limited access to suppliers from Latin America. A rebound followed in 2021, with volume reaching 155.9 thousand tonnes, supported by growing consumer preference for healthy eating and continued import growth for nuts like peanuts, hazelnuts, cashews, and walnuts.

Growth continued in the following years, with the market reaching 177.5 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 183.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. This expansion was accompanied by higher import volumes, including increased procurement from Brazilian suppliers. Global supply chains faced disruptions from events like the conflict in Iran, affecting pistachio supplies, while regulatory changes such as Russia's planned export duties on unprocessed pine nuts from August 2024 introduced new market conditions.
