Earlier Report Observations

The tomato market in Uzbekistan contracted significantly between 2018 and 2020, with domestic production falling from 2.28 million tonnes to 1.93 million tonnes. This decline was driven by persistent climatic pressures, including water scarcity and extreme weather, which strained yields. The downturn was further exacerbated in 2020 by supply chain and distribution disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

A strong recovery followed in 2021, with production rebounding to 2.21 million tonnes. This growth was supported by sustained state investment in agricultural producers and the expansion of greenhouse farming, which facilitated year-round cultivation. The introduction of new, more resilient tomato varieties and the adoption of advanced agri-technologies, including AI-assisted growing methods, contributed to increased output.

Production stabilized around 2.2 million tonnes in 2022 and 2023. During this period, continued government initiatives to develop greenhouse capacity and support farmers maintained market stability. The launch of new product segments, such as cherry tomatoes, catered to growing consumer demand for fresh, high-quality, and organically grown produce.
