Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the edible brassicas market in Uzbekistan experienced a contraction in both production and domestic market volume. In 2018, the state-cooperative concern 'Uzplodoovoshvinprom' implemented comprehensive measures to develop fruit and vegetable growing, supporting production infrastructure. However, the approval of the Agricultural Development Strategy for 2020-2030 in 2019 set long-term targets without preventing an immediate downturn. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 subsequently disrupted the vegetable market, affecting investments and regulation, which contributed to the decline in output and consumption.

The market rebounded in 2021, with domestic volume rising to 661 thousand tonnes as a sharp drop in exports left more produce available locally, reinforcing Uzbekistan's role as a major supplier of white cabbage to Russia. The following year, anomalous January frosts damaged part of the harvest, yet record export shipments of 148 thousand tonnes diverted supply abroad, reducing the domestic market size to 640 thousand tonnes. By 2023, production expanded to 849 thousand tonnes, and the market volume grew to 746 thousand tonnes, aided by lower exports due to reduced demand in key foreign markets and the lingering effects of frosts. This period also saw the emergence of a new product segment with the introduction of yellow and purple cauliflower varieties, diversifying consumer choice.

In 2024, the sector showed a strengthened export orientation, with shipments of white cabbage to Russia surging fourfold to 72 thousand tonnes. A concurrent 9.9% growth in retail trade turnover at comparable prices indicated robust consumer demand within Uzbekistan. Legislative amendments affecting farming and new labeling rules for fruit and vegetable products, requiring country-of-origin information on price tags from September 2024, began to shape the market environment.
