From 2018 to 2020, the tomato market volume in Paraguay grew from 57 409 t to a peak of 83 783 t. This expansion was initially supported by increased cultivated areas and investments in production systems, which enabled domestic output to fully meet local demand and reduced reliance on imports. The sharp rise in imports during 2020 contributed significantly to the market peak.

After 2020, the market volume declined, falling to 57 502 t by 2023. Adverse weather conditions, such as high temperatures in early 2023, delayed harvesting and constrained production. Concurrently, profitability challenges for small-scale producers due to low farmgate prices affected incentives. In 2022, the certification of domestic tomatoes under Mercosur safety standards enhanced product quality but did not reverse the overall market contraction.

In the following years, initiatives like the tomato industrialization plan with international support and direct negotiations between producers and supermarkets aimed at improving planning and price stability. By 2024, a recovery in domestic production led to lower retail prices, strengthening the position of Paraguayan tomatoes in the local market.

Paraguay's tomato production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 57 775 tons of tomatoes, representing a steady 7.0% increase from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production rose by 15.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.9%.
