Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, Paraguay's cassava market volume remained at a high level between 3.3 and 3.4 million tonnes. The period began with increased supply for the starch industry in 2018, though with lower starch content affecting quality. Despite the pandemic in 2020, strong export demand for cassava starch helped sustain farm incomes and production. A severe drought in 2021 damaged crops and limited planting areas, which contained further market growth and stabilized the volume near the 3.4 million tonne mark.

The market volume fell sharply to 2.2 million tonnes in 2022 as the prolonged drought and pest attacks significantly reduced harvests. A recovery began in 2023, with volume reaching 2.4 million tonnes, supported by Paraguay's established role as South America's largest cassava exporter. More than half of domestic production was destined for export, driven by investment in industrial processing factories which created demand for fresh roots.

Subsequent developments included intensified regional competition from record harvests in neighboring countries in 2024. In 2025, the state-owned company Comfar inaugurated a modern starch plant, cementing its role as an industry leader. However, the sector also faced ongoing challenges from drought, low international prices, and a strong currency which pressured processor margins.
