The volume of Lebanon's fresh tomato market rose sharply from 186 thousand tons in 2018 to 232 thousand tons in 2019. This expansion was propelled by state-led efforts to increase domestic tomato cultivation, coupled with population growth and stronger demand for fresh vegetables.

Market size dipped slightly in 2020 before recovering to 237 thousand tons in 2021 and climbing to 248 thousand tons in 2022. During this period, local supply was often tight due to high production costs for fertilizers, pesticides, and transport, prompting a rise in imports to meet demand. The government announced targets to boost daily output to 350 tons in an attempt to stabilize the market.

In 2023, the market contracted to 214 thousand tons as tomato production fell. This decline was driven by a reduction in planted area and unfavorable weather, which lowered yields, while persistently high input prices squeezed farmers' margins.

Lebanon's tomato production in 2020 reached 219.8 thousand tonnes, marking a 5.0% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production declined by 3.1%, with an average annual growth rate of -1.0%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 186.6 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 231.5 thousand tonnes. The sharpest decline occurred in 2018 with a 17.7% drop, whereas the largest increase was in 2019 with a 24.0% rise.

Exports tomato from Lebanon

Lebanon's tomato exports grew for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 870 tonnes. This represents a 30.7% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports expanded by 47.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 13.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the main destinations for Lebanon's tomato exports in volume terms were Saudi Arabia (27.1% of total exports), the United Arab Emirates (23.6%), and Qatar (21.7%). Together, these three countries accounted for 72.4% of Lebanon's tomato export flows.

In 2020, the value of Lebanon's tomato exports amounted to 637 thousand US dollars, a 22.9% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, export values fell by 18.3%, equivalent to an average annual decline of 6.5%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 827 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase that year at 7.0%.

During 2017-2020, the United Arab Emirates (30.4% of export value), Qatar (24.8%), and Kuwait (22.6%) were the leading destinations for Lebanon's tomato exports in value terms. Combined, these three countries represented 77.7% of total export value.

Import volumes reached their lowest point in 2018 at 113 tonnes and peaked in 2020 at 4 513 tonnes, representing a 40-fold difference between these years. In 2020, imports surged by 430.9% year-on-year. The sharpest decline occurred in 2018 with a 78.0% drop, while the largest increase was in 2019 with a 649.5% rise.
