Iran's garlic market volume fell sharply after 2018, dropping from 58 388 metric tons to 30 539 metric tons in 2019. This contraction was driven by a surge in exports, which rose from 1 669 metric tons to 29 954 metric tons, redirecting a large portion of the stable domestic production abroad. The period was marked by underlying challenges in the agricultural sector, including increased use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, higher energy consumption, and significant state control over production, which influenced the market's structure.

From 2020 to 2023, domestic garlic production remained consistent at around 60 000 metric tons annually. Fluctuations in export volumes, which ranged from 15 126 to 22 470 metric tons, became the key determinant of local supply. When exports eased in 2022, the domestic market volume recovered to 44 598 metric tons, but increased shipments in 2023 reduced it again to 41 022 metric tons.

Iran's garlic production increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 60 603 tonnes, remaining broadly stable compared to the previous year.

Exports garlic from Iran

The market showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2017, then peaked in 2019 with a 23-fold increase between these years. In 2020, Iran exported 22 470 tonnes of garlic, marking a significant decline of 25.0% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, the main markets for Iran's garlic exports in volume were Iraq (42.2% of exports), Russia (24.6% of exports), and Afghanistan (13.0% of exports). Together, these three countries accounted for 79.7% of total export flows.
