Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the European fresh tomato market volume grew from 23.3 million metric tons to 25.4 million metric tons. This expansion was driven by increased global cultivation area supported by technological innovations and a rising consumer preference for fresh tomatoes due to greater health awareness. The trend continued until 2020 when market volume fell to 22.7 million metric tons, primarily due to supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The market recovered strongly in 2021, reaching nearly 26.0 million metric tons. This rebound was facilitated by the ongoing expansion of greenhouse production, which helped secure year-round supply. However, in 2022, the market volume contracted sharply to 21.2 million metric tons. Difficult growing conditions, including extreme heat and a shortage of CO2 for greenhouse use, led to a disappointing harvest season. Soaring energy prices further pressured producers, increasing costs and reducing margins.

A partial recovery followed in 2023, with the market volume rising to 22.8 million metric tons. This growth was supported by continued consumer demand for organically grown and sustainably produced tomatoes. Concurrent investments in sustainable agriculture and processing innovations helped improve efficiency and quality, contributing to the market's rebound.
