Earlier Report Observations

The tomato market in India from 2018 to 2021 was shaped by government interventions aimed at price stabilization and supply chain improvement. The launch of Operation Greens in 2018 introduced procurement mechanisms and price controls to reduce volatility, while the promotion of hybrid varieties sought to boost yields. Despite a dip in volume in 2019, the expansion of APMC-free marketing in 14 states facilitated smoother sales. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 exposed logistic bottlenecks, accelerating calls for greater processing capacity which supported market volume growth into 2021.

In the following years, the market remained sensitive to weather and structural factors. State-owned agencies like NAFED and NCCF continued bulk procurement to curb price spikes, while private-sector processors such as Sahyadri entered the market to absorb excess produce. However, heavy monsoon rains in key producing states during 2023 disrupted supply, leading to record retail prices and a slight contraction in market volume. Concurrently, export growth to Bangladesh highlighted improving market access, though reliance on imported tomato paste underscored persistent gaps in domestic processing.
