Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the tomato market in Côte d'Ivoire grew substantially, with total volume increasing from 47 thousand tons to 75 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by a 31% rise in local fresh tomato production over the five years leading up to 2018, as more community organizations and youth turned to tomato cultivation. At the same time, imports surged from 3 thousand tons to 22 thousand tons by 2023, indicating strong domestic demand that local output could not fully meet.

Weather variability and traditional farming methods kept average yields around 10 tons per hectare, constraining production growth and reinforcing reliance on imports. By 2021, rising import prices reflected mounting supply pressures, while the country's role as a major tomato importer in West Africa highlighted the significance of regional trade flows. In 2022, the market remained well-supplied, with some price decreases for fresh tomatoes reported by the National Council for the Fight against High Cost of Living.

Local production initiatives continued to develop, notably in Ouindié (Biankouma), where a project aimed to produce and market over 100 tons of fresh tomatoes annually by 2024. The engagement of out-of-school youth in tomato farming provided additional labor and helped sustain the sector's dynamism, contributing to gradual output increases.
