Earlier Report Observations

Tomato production in Cameroon began the period at 1 161 thousand tons in 2018, supported by year-round cultivation potential and dry-season advantages that reduce fungal attacks and production costs. However, the market volume declined to 1 102 thousand tons in 2019. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to border closures and a sharp drop in tomato prices, but a government recovery plan aimed at saving 600 000 jobs in the sector helped stabilize output, with production reaching 1 103 thousand tons.

From 2021 onward, tomato production entered a steady growth phase. Output rose to 1 141 thousand tons in 2021, then jumped to 1 216 thousand tons in 2022, and further increased to 1 248 thousand tons in 2023. This consistent expansion over three years lifted the market volume by over 13% from the 2020 level.
