Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the sunflower seed market volume in Southern Asia declined from 544 thousand tons to 487 thousand tons, then stabilized at 489 thousand tons in 2021. The market saw a sharp increase to 608 thousand tons in 2022, representing 24% growth, followed by a drop to 539 thousand tons in 2023.

The surge in 2022 was accompanied by a rise in domestic production to 492 thousand tons and higher imports, which reached 119 thousand tons, boosting overall supply. The subsequent contraction in 2023 brought the market volume back near 2020 levels.

In 2024, sunflower seed imports rose to 148 thousand tons, reflecting sustained demand. This growth is supported by increasing consumer awareness of health benefits, demand for packaged snacks, the launch of new high-yield varieties in Turkey, and India's policy to expand sunflower cultivation under its National Mission on Edible Oils.
