The downturn accelerated in 2021-2022; first, sustained high sunflower oil prices pressured the market, and then the Russia-Ukraine war caused a severe supply shock. As Turkey sourced much of its sunflower and oilcake from Russia and Ukraine, the conflict directly disrupted shipments and contributed to a market contraction to 1.7 million tons by 2022.

The market showed signs of recovery in 2023, with volume increasing to 1.9 million tons. This rebound corresponded with higher import volumes, indicating some adaptation to the previous years' supply chain disruptions.
