Production of sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oils in South America experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 1 887 thousand tonnes in 2019, output fell sharply to 1 497 thousand tonnes in 2020 before recovering strongly to 2 298 thousand tonnes by 2023. This growth toward the end of the period aligned with Argentina's reinforced position as the world's fourth-largest sunflower oil producer, a status highlighted in 2024.

Domestic market volume mirrored this volatility, peaking at 1 711 thousand tonnes in 2021 before contracting to 1 121 thousand tonnes in 2022. This sharp decline was primarily due to a surge in exports, which nearly quadrupled to 899 thousand tonnes that year. The shift in global trade patterns following the Russia-Ukraine conflict redirected international demand toward South American suppliers, a key driver behind the increased export volumes.

The market was further shaped by technological developments and broader energy trends. In Brazil, the testing of new Clearfield® herbicide-tolerant sunflower hybrids in 2024 aimed to improve crop productivity. Simultaneously, rising crude oil prices stimulated additional demand for vegetable oils in biofuel production, influencing the sector's dynamics.
