The market volume for sunflower, safflower, and cottonseed oil in Togo expanded from 12 123 tonnes in 2018 to 13 093 tonnes in 2019, supported by the country's inherent potential in oilseed production, though this was constrained by major limitations such as water scarcity affecting agricultural output. Market volume remained stable at around 13 044 tonnes in 2020.

A sharp contraction followed in 2021, with the market falling to 9 920 tonnes. Recovery began in 2022, when the market grew to 10 897 tonnes, influenced by global supply chain disruptions and labor shortages in processing plants due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected oil availability. Concurrently, rising worldwide demand for healthy foods bolstered consumption. Growth continued in 2023, with the market reaching 12 090 tonnes, largely driven by imports as domestic production remained insufficient to meet demand. Unfavorable taxation and weak local output also contributed to rising vegetable oil prices during this period.

In 2024, a semi-industrial plant for red and palm kernel oil launched in Yoto 2 commune, marking an expansion in local processing capacity. AGROKOM Sarl, a major local player processing organic soybeans since 2012, continued its operations. The Togolese government also modernized its environmental legal framework, which may influence agricultural and industrial practices. However, sunflower production locally is still limited by water shortages, and the market relies heavily on imports facilitated by trading companies based in Lomé and the wider region.
