Production of cottonseed oil in Mali from 2018 to 2023 was primarily driven by the cotton harvest volume. An excellent cotton crop exceeding 700 000 tons in 2018 supported oil production of 43 800 tons. A historic cotton harvest of 760 000 tons in 2022, achieved through renewed fertilizer subsidies and increased minimum purchase prices, pushed oil production to 60 800 tons.

Output declined in 2020-2021 due to low global cotton prices and financial difficulties in the sector. In 2023, a severe jasside pest infestation sharply reduced cotton output, while an ECOWAS embargo limited access to imported agricultural inputs, contributing to a drop in oil production to 46 200 tons. Throughout the period, the state-owned CMDT played a central role by banning cottonseed exports to secure feedstock for local oil mills and securing financing for the sector.

In 2020, Mali produced 59 900 tonnes of cottonseed oil and fractions, representing a modest year-on-year decline of 8.3%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 11.3%, averaging an annual decrease of 3.9%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 43 800 tonnes, which marked the largest decline of 35.1% that year.
