Earlier Report Observations

Colombia's sugar cane market for human consumption expanded from 33 454 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 36 365 thousand tonnes in 2020. This growth was initially supported by a projected 9% increase in sugar production in 2018, which raised demand for cane, and the elimination of a 10% tariff on Colombian sugar exports to Peru that improved trade access. The market continued to grow in 2020 as reduced Brazilian participation in sugar imports and the stability provided by the Price Stabilization Fund for Sugar (FEPA) favored domestic production conditions.

Production dipped to 34 583 thousand tonnes in 2021, primarily due to a 10% decline in sugar exports that lowered cane demand. A recovery followed in 2022, with output reaching 35 723 thousand tonnes, driven by a 15% rise in domestic sugar sales and the sector's adoption of climate mitigation strategies developed with the Colombian Sugar Cane Research Center (Cenicaña).

The market contracted sharply to 32 189 thousand tonnes in 2023. This decline coincided with a 75.1% surge in sugar imports, as buyers stockpiled to avoid anticipated logistical problems, which reduced the need for domestic cane processing.
