Earlier Report Observations

Production of sugar cane for human consumption in Ecuador increased from 7 502 thousand tons in 2018 to 11 373 thousand tons in 2021. This growth was supported by a global sugar deficit that emerged in 2019, boosting demand for cane, and by government actions in 2021 to ensure self-sufficiency through coordinated efforts with sugar mills and a target of 400 thousand tons of sugar output.

Output then contracted to 7 740 thousand tons in 2022 as cane production and yield fell by 32% and 22% respectively, while new front-of-pack labeling regulations for processed foods—designed to inform consumers and encourage healthier habits—began to affect sugar demand. The downturn deepened in 2023, with production dropping to 6 254 thousand tons after El Niño weather conditions hindered the harvest of more than 20% of planted area and prompted some growers to shift to more profitable crops such as bananas and cocoa.
