Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for sugar beet in Iran declined from 6 291 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 5 012 thousand tonnes by 2023. The initial significant drop to 5 473 thousand tonnes in 2019 was linked to a reported decrease in domestic sugar beet and sugarcane production that year.

Market volumes stabilized around 5 433 thousand tonnes in 2020, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic which led to an adjustment in sugar consumption. In 2021, a substantial 70% increase in the government-guaranteed purchase price for sugar beet helped support growers, countering a 7% reduction in cultivation area and resulting in a slight recovery to 5 435 thousand tonnes.

Production resumed its downward trend in 2022 and 2023, falling to 5 147 thousand tonnes and then 5 012 thousand tonnes. During this period, agricultural authorities promoted the expansion of autumn sugar beet cultivation by 40 000 hectares to improve water-use efficiency, though these measures did not offset the broader decline in output.
