Earlier Report Observations

Slovak sugar beet production began the period at 1.3 million tons in 2018, with market volume at 1.1 million tons. Uncertainty following the end of the EU's sugar beet and sugar market order in 2017 preceded a 4.6% production drop in 2019, directly linked to lower prices after the abolition of EU sugar quotas, which pressured growers to consider alternative crops.

Production saw a modest recovery in 2020, supported by the ongoing advocacy of the Slovak Sugar Beet Growers' Union. A significant 7.2% production increase followed in 2021, driven by a greater focus on sustainable farming and the application of biostimulants and mycorrhizal fungi to improve crop resilience. This growth was sharply reversed in 2022 when a severe water deficit during critical vegetation phases caused production to plummet by 19.6%.

Despite unfavorable weather during harvest, production rebounded strongly by 28.4% in 2023 to 1.4 million tons. This recovery was underpinned by maintained cultivation on approximately 22 300 hectares, backed by direct coupled support and green diesel subsidies. The sector faced a structural shock in 2024 with the announced closure of the Trenčianska Teplá sugar plant by German owner Nordzucker AG, citing economic unsustainability due to climate change, inflation, and price volatility.
