The strawberry market volume in Southern Europe remained stable around 350 thousand tonnes in 2018 and 2019, supported by widespread household purchases in Italy and Spain's consolidation as the leading fresh strawberry supplier to Germany. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 severely disrupted supply chains and consumer access, causing the market to contract by roughly 24% to 268 thousand tonnes.

A recovery began in 2021, propelled by a documented 4% increase in strawberry consumption in Italy, where large retail chains accounted for the majority of sales. Market volume continued to grow through 2023, reaching 351 thousand tonnes, sustained by strong European demand for high-quality fruit and increased export activity from Italy, despite industry challenges such as rising energy costs affecting greenhouse operations and packaging.

In 2020, Southern Europe produced 561.5 thousand tonnes of strawberries, marking an 8.1% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 10.2%, which translates to an average annual decline of 3.5%. The most notable growth occurred in 2019, with a 5.0% increase.

Strawberry production in Southern Europe declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 1 333 million US dollars, reflecting a significant 13.1% drop compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 6.7%, averaging a 2.3% annual decline. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 622 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 13.5%.

Exports strawberries from Southern Europe

Strawberry exports from Southern Europe rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 346.1 thousand tonnes, up 8.5% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 2.4%, with an average annual rate of 0.8%. The lowest volume was in 2018 at 293.5 thousand tonnes, which experienced the largest decline of 13.2%. In contrast, 2019 saw the biggest increase of 8.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, the three largest markets for strawberry exports in kind were Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, collectively accounting for 54.4% of total flows.

In 2020, the value of strawberry exports from Southern Europe amounted to 821.7 million US dollars, a 2.6% year-on-year increase. Over the 2017–2020 period, exports rose by 6.4%, averaging 2.1% annually. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 2.1%, while the biggest increase was in 2018 at 5.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France were the top buyers of strawberries from Southern Europe in value terms, with shares of 30.4%, 13.8%, and 12.5%, respectively. Together, they made up 56.7% of total export value.

Imports strawberries to Southern Europe

After two years of growth, strawberry imports into Southern Europe declined. In 2020, imports stood at 52.8 thousand tonnes, a 13.1% decrease from the previous year. The peak volume was recorded in 2019 at 60.7 thousand tonnes, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 10.2%.

Analysis of strawberry imports in kind from 2017 to 2020 reveals a wide distribution across many markets. Morocco, Germany, and France accounted for 17.3%, 5.1%, and 4.1% of imports, respectively, totaling only 26.5% of flows. The remaining 73.5% came from various other partners.

Imports in value, M $ US

Strawberry imports into Southern Europe fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 178.7 million US dollars, down 11.2% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 2.3%, with an average annual growth of 0.8%. The highest value was in 2018 at 202.0 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 15.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, strawberries were imported into Southern Europe from a diverse range of markets. Morocco, Germany, and France contributed 22.3%, 5.5%, and 4.6% of import value, respectively, totaling 32.3%. The remaining 67.7% came from numerous smaller destinations.
