Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, US strawberry production increased from 2 226 thousand tons to 2 282 thousand tons, supported by growing consumer demand for healthy foods and advances in agricultural techniques like protected cultivation and day-neutral varieties that enabled year-round supply. The market volume also grew, reaching 2 294 thousand tons in 2019. In 2020, production edged down to 2 242 thousand tons and market volume dipped to 2 253 thousand tons, as pandemic-related supply chain disruptions and labor shortages temporarily constrained output, despite heightened consumer interest in fresh, nutritious foods during COVID-19.

A significant shift occurred in 2021 when strawberry exports surged to 198 thousand tons, up from just 3 thousand tons the previous year, driven by expanded harvested areas in California and Florida and stronger international demand. This export leap reduced domestic market volume to 2 059 thousand tons, even as production held steady at 2 242 thousand tons. By 2022, production rebounded to 2 386 thousand tons and market volume recovered to 2 189 thousand tons, aided by the introduction of premium varieties such as Driscoll's 'Rosé Berries', which expanded into over 1,200 US stores, and growing consumer preference for ready-to-eat and healthy snack options.

Production continued its upward trend, reaching 2 470 thousand tons in 2023, while market volume grew to 2 301 thousand tons. This growth was fueled by further expansion of cultivated acreage in key states like California and Florida, along with rising fresh strawberry exports to Canada and Mexico. The period also saw notable industry innovations, including the establishment of the first large-scale vertical berry farm in the US by Plenty Unlimited Inc. in 2024, aiming to enhance production efficiency and meet consistent demand for premium, sustainably grown strawberries.
