The ASEAN fresh strawberry market expanded consistently from 2018 to 2023, with total market volume growing from 8 709 t to 15 268 t. Domestic production more than tripled from 842 t to 3 112 t over this period, while imports, which constitute the bulk of supply, rose from 8 161 t to 12 591 t.

In 2024, strawberry imports into the region jumped to 22 965 t. This sharp increase was facilitated by the lifting of import restrictions on Japanese strawberries in the Philippines in December 2024, allowing premium imports to enter the market. Concurrent government promotion of the strawberry industry, such as in La Trinidad, Philippines, helped bolster demand and product diversification.

ASEAN's strawberry production has grown for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 1,202 tonnes of strawberries, marking a 9.2% increase from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 46.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7%.

Exports strawberries from ASEAN

The export market for strawberries from ASEAN showed significant fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 at 55 tonnes, which was a sharp 88.4% decline from the previous year. In contrast, the highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 471 tonnes, representing a 60.0% increase from earlier levels. The gap between these years was substantial, with exports in 2019 being 8.6 times higher than in 2020.

Strawberry exports from ASEAN have increased for the third consecutive year in value terms. In 2020, exports amounted to 1,688 thousand US dollars, an 8.2% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 99.8%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 25.9%.

Imports strawberries to ASEAN

ASEAN's strawberry imports in volume terms saw a robust rise in 2020, reaching 9,261 tonnes, which was a 16.2% increase from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 18.3%, with an annualized rate of 5.7%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 2.4% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, South Korea, Australia, and the United States consistently led the country structure of strawberry imports in volume terms. South Korea accounted for 42.7% of imports, Australia for 22.8%, and the United States for 19.2%. Together, these three countries represented 84.7% of total import flows.

In 2020, ASEAN's strawberry imports in value terms totaled 71,412 thousand US dollars, showing an abrupt increase of 37.7% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, import value rose by 40.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.9%. The largest decline was in 2019, with a 9.2% decrease.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, South Korea, Australia, and the United States formed the core of ASEAN's strawberry imports in value terms. South Korea held 43.5% of the import value, Australia 20.8%, and the United States 19.5%. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 83.7% of total import flows.
