Coconut production in ASEAN remained relatively stable from 2018 to 2019, with a slight decline in 2020. Research into improved coconut varieties in Malaysia, supported by the Agriculture Department and MARDI, helped maintain supply quality, though overall market volume dipped.

From 2021, both production and market size expanded. Local production growth in Malaysia and the transformation of the Philippine industry, fueled by rising demand for non-traditional coconut products like virgin coconut oil and coconut sugar, boosted consumption. Enhanced market access through the EU's GSP+ for the Philippines and free trade agreements for Vietnam strengthened export opportunities, supporting market growth.

By 2024, the region faced supply constraints due to extreme weather events, particularly in Malaysia, leading to coconut shortages and price increases. Concurrently, Vietnam and Indonesia invested in transportation infrastructure and processing facilities to increase exports, indicating continued international market expansion.

ASEAN's coconut production volume declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, 35 528 K t of coconuts were produced in ASEAN, down by 1.9% compared to 2019. The maximum production was recorded in 2018 at 36 249 K t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.6%.

Exports coconuts from ASEAN

Exports in kind, K t

After a two-year decline, ASEAN's coconut exports increased in 2020. The region exported 961 K t of coconuts, up by 48.4% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 41.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -16.2%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 648 K t, while the largest annual decline occurred in 2018 at 59.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, ASEAN's coconut exports in kind were distributed across a wide range of partner countries. China accounted for 26.6% of exports, Canada for 14.5%, and the United States for 4.0%, together representing just 45.1% of total flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

Following a two-year reduction, ASEAN's coconut export volumes in value terms increased in 2020. The region exported 1 059 M $ US worth of coconuts, marking a sharp rise of 64.0% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 7.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 646 M $ US, which also saw the largest annual decline of 29.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, ASEAN's coconut exports in value terms were spread across many countries. China held a 22.2% share, the United States 11.6%, and the Netherlands 6.0%, jointly accounting for only 39.8% of total flows.

The market showed signs of volatility during the observed period. ASEAN imported 55 K t of coconuts in 2020, corresponding to an abrupt increase of 37.1% versus the previous year. The maximum import volume was recorded in 2018 at 82 K t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 168.4%. The lowest volume was in 2017, with a 2.7-fold difference between the peak in 2018 and the trough in 2017. The largest annual decline occurred in 2019 at 50.9%.

There were noticeable fluctuations in market performance during the period. ASEAN imported approximately 317 M $ US of coconuts in 2020, showing an abrupt uptick of 230.6% year-over-year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 96 M $ US, which also saw the largest annual decline of 42.1%. The peak was in 2020, with a 3.3-fold gap between the high in 2020 and the low in 2019.
