The domestic market for strawberries in South Africa experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After reaching a peak of over 10 000 t in 2019, the available volume declined in subsequent years, stabilizing around 9 500 t by 2021 before a sharper drop to 9 113 t in 2023.

This movement was primarily driven by a consistent expansion in domestic production, which grew from 9 008 t to 13 274 t over the period. However, a substantial and rapid increase in exports, rising from 931 t to 4 690 t, offset much of the production growth, limiting the volume retained for local consumption.

Imports played a diminishing role, falling from 810 t to 529 t by 2023, which further constrained market supply during periods of high export activity.

South Africa's strawberry production has grown for the third year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 11 637 tons of strawberries, representing a 7.0% increase from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, production rose by 29.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.9%.

Exports strawberries from South Africa

South Africa's strawberry exports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, the country exported 2 732 tons of strawberries, a sharp 58.1% rise compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports surged by 193.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 43.2%.

From 2018 to 2021, the United Arab Emirates, Mozambique, and Namibia were the top destinations for South Africa's strawberry exports by volume. The UAE accounted for 33.9% of exports, Mozambique for 15.8%, and Namibia for 11.2%, together making up 60.9% of total shipments.

South Africa's strawberry exports in value terms have grown for the third year running. In 2021, exports reached 13 764 thousand US dollars, a steep 72.9% increase from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, export value jumped by 447.5%, with an average annual rate of 76.2%.

South Africa's strawberry imports have declined for the second year in a row. In 2021, imports totaled 587 tons, down 19.5% from the prior year. From 2018 to 2021, imports fell by 27.5%, with an average annual decline of 10.2%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 984 tons, which saw a 21.5% increase from 2018. In 2020, imports dropped sharply by 25.9%.
