After two years of growth, Africa's strawberry production declined. In 2020, the continent produced 627.6 thousand tons of strawberries, marking a significant year-over-year decrease of 14.5%. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 25.4%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 7.8%. The peak production was recorded in 2019 at 734.2 thousand tons, with the largest annual increase occurring in 2018 at 21.6%.

Africa's strawberry production value rose for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 2 522 million US dollars, representing a 10.2% increase compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 49.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.4%.

Exports strawberries from Africa

In 2020, Africa's strawberry exports totaled 40 556 tons, a 24.7% drop from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 8.6%, equating to an annualized decline of 3.0%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 53 834 tons, with the largest annual increase also occurring in 2019 at 31.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Africa's strawberry exports in kind were distributed across a broad range of buyers. Spain accounted for 30.0% of exports, Belgium for 10.9%, and the Netherlands for 9.0%, together making up 49.8% of total exports. Many other countries held smaller but notable shares.

In 2020, Africa's strawberry exports in value terms reached 161.0 million US dollars, showing a slight decrease of 1.5% from the previous year. Over the period 2017-2020, exports increased by 9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 128.2 million US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2019 at 163.4 million US dollars. The largest annual decline was in 2018 at 13.2%, and the largest increase was in 2019 at 27.5%.

During 2017-2020, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands were key buyers of African strawberries in value terms, with shares of 26.6%, 11.8%, and 8.8% respectively. However, their combined share totaled only 47.2% of exports, leaving 52.8% distributed among numerous other partners.

The structure of imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 points to a diversified set of partners. France accounted for 5.4% of imports, Spain for 4.5%, and the Netherlands for 4.2%, jointly making up only 14.1% of total flows. The remaining 85.9% was spread across many smaller markets.
