Africa's production of plums and sloes has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the continent produced 412.3 thousand tons, which represents a 3.8% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production fell by 10.6%, with an average annual decline of 3.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 484.3 thousand tons. The most significant drop occurred in 2019 with an 11.5% decrease, while the largest increase was seen in 2018 with a 5.0% rise.

The value of plums and sloes production in Africa has also decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 525.6 million US dollars, marking a 5.7% decline compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value dropped by 13.8%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 4.8%. The peak value was reached in 2018 at 682.1 million US dollars. The sharpest decline happened in 2019 with an 18.3% drop, while the strongest growth was recorded in 2018 with an 11.9% increase.

Exports plums and sloes from Africa

Africa's exports of plums and sloes have declined for the third year running. In 2020, export volumes reached 46 334 tons, representing a 5.6% decrease from the previous year. Over the four-year period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 29%, with an average annual decline of 10.8%.

From 2017 through 2020, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates remained the primary destinations for Africa's plum and sloe exports by volume. The Netherlands accounted for 36.3% of exports, the United Kingdom for 21.1%, and the United Arab Emirates for 11.1%. Together, these three countries represented 68.4% of total export flows.

The value of Africa's plum and sloe exports has also declined for three consecutive years. In 2020, exports were valued at 59 070 thousand US dollars, which is 7.5% lower than the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, export value decreased by 31.5%, with an average annual decline of 11.9%.

During the 2017-2020 period, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates were the main destinations for Africa's plum and sloe exports by value. The Netherlands accounted for 38.1% of export value, the United Kingdom for 20.6%, and the United Arab Emirates for 11.5%. Collectively, these three markets represented 70.3% of total export value.

Imports plums and sloes to Africa

After two years of growth, Africa's imports of plums and sloes declined in 2020. Import volumes reached 20 883 tons, showing a sharp decrease of 28.8% compared to the previous year. However, looking at the full 2017-2020 period, imports actually increased by 66%, with an average annual growth rate of 18.4%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 29 325 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 67.6%.

Throughout the 2017-2020 period, Syria, Italy, and Greece consistently dominated Africa's plum and sloe imports by volume. Syria accounted for 18.5% of imports, Italy for 17.9%, and Greece for 14.4%. Together, these three countries represented 50.8% of total import flows.

The import market showed considerable volatility during these years. Import values reached their lowest point in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a two-fold difference between these extremes.
