The Spanish still wine market volume declined from 3 394 million liters in 2018 to 2 855 million liters in 2020, with the pandemic in 2020 significantly reducing consumption and disrupting the hospitality sector, which traditionally drives demand.

A strong recovery followed, lifting market volume to 4 133 million liters in 2022, driven by a nearly 50% increase in wine tourism that boosted domestic demand and a concurrent rise in bulk wine exports, alongside higher prices for packaged premium wines in markets like the United States.

Market volume then adjusted to 3 336 million liters by 2024, while the market value remained stable above $7 billion, as consumer preference shifted toward higher-value still wines with Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) – which saw volume grow 3.4% and value surge 13.7% in 2023 – and sales migrated toward direct and online channels.

Spain's still wine production value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 7 606 million US dollars, marking a 9.9% decrease compared to 2019. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 8 902 million US dollars, with the largest increase of 7.3% also occurring that year.

Still wine production in Spain declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, Spain produced 4 610 million liters of still wine, down by 9.6% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 16.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of -5.7%.

Spain exported 1 840 million liters of still wine in 2020, representing a 5.4% year-over-year decline. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 13%, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.5%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 809 million liters, which saw the largest decline of 14.5%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 7.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Germany, and Portugal consistently served as the main destinations for Spain's still wine exports in volume terms. France accounted for 24.3% of exports, Germany for 16.8%, and Portugal for 10.6%, together representing 51.7% of total export flows.

In 2020, Spain's still wine export value totaled 2 536 million US dollars, a slight increase of 1.2% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 6.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 2 505 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 12.0%. The highest value occurred in 2018 at 2 846 million US dollars, with the largest increase of 5.1% that year.

Between 2017 and 2020, the geographical structure of Spain's still wine exports in value terms was highly diversified. Germany accounted for 13.0% of exports, the United Kingdom for 11.5%, and France for 10.5%, together representing only 34.9% of total flows. The lowest volume of still wine imports to Spain was recorded in 2019 at 42 million liters, which saw the largest decline of 48.6%. In 2020, imports surged to 85 million liters, up by 100.2% year-over-year, reaching the highest level during this period. This resulted in a peak-to-trough ratio of 2 times between 2019 and 2020.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 8%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 2.6%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 127 million US dollars, which saw the largest increase of 25.4%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 12.7%.
