From 2018, the Romanian still wine market experienced growth in both volume and value, reaching 568.9 million liters by 2021. This expansion was supported by changing consumer lifestyles with a rising preference for higher-priced wine segments, along with industry efforts to promote authentic local varieties through festivals and storytelling packaging, which encouraged consumption and elevated average prices.

Market volume subsequently contracted to 512.7 million liters in 2022 as producers faced increased costs for energy, labor, and transportation. By 2024, the introduction of an excise tax on still wine and a VAT hike to 21% raised retail prices by around 5%, while adverse weather conditions including drought and frost reduced domestic production by approximately 19.8%. These pressures pushed the market volume down to 465.8 million liters, though the value rose to 918.3 million $ US due to the higher price level.

After two years of growth, Romania's still wine export volume declined in 2020, reaching 19 659 thousand liters, which is 1.5% lower than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 38.2%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 11.4%. The peak volume was recorded in 2019 at 19 954 thousand liters, with the largest annual increase occurring in 2018 at 32.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain were the top destinations for Romania's still wine exports by volume, accounting for 21.4%, 17.7%, and 14.2% of exports, respectively. Together, these three countries comprised 53.3% of total export flows.

In 2020, Romania's still wine exports totaled 34 353 thousand US dollars, up by 3.5% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 32%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 34 732 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase of 33.5%. In contrast, the largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 4.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands led as the top buyers of Romanian still wine by value, with shares of 19.8%, 19.5%, and 13.9% of exports, respectively. Their combined share reached 53.2% of total export value.

Imports still wine to Romania

Following a two-year decline, foreign still wine supplies to Romania increased in 2020, with imports amounting to 38 406 thousand liters, a 29.3% rise from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 11.4%, with a compound annual decline rate of 3.9%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 29 695 thousand liters, and the largest annual decline occurred in 2018 at 22.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain, Moldova, and Italy were the main sources of still wine imports to Romania by volume, accounting for 38.0%, 31.3%, and 9.4% of imports, respectively. Together, these three countries absorbed 78.8% of total import volume.
