Earlier Report Observations

The market for starch-manufacture residues in Northern Africa contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023, with total volume falling from 224.8 thousand tonnes to 119.8 thousand tonnes. This decline was driven entirely by a collapse in imports, which dropped from 167.7 thousand tonnes to 49.9 thousand tonnes over the period. In contrast, domestic production demonstrated consistent growth, rising from 57.2 thousand tonnes to 71.8 thousand tonnes.

The shift toward domestic supply was accompanied by a modest increase in exports, which remained negligible but grew from 0.1 thousand tonnes to 1.9 thousand tonnes. By 2024, preliminary trade data showed a partial recovery in imports to 68.6 thousand tonnes, while exports reached 3.0 thousand tonnes.

In 2024, regional industrial waste management gained momentum. The General Industrial Authority for Northern Africa reported a 13.4% increase in solid industrial waste processing during 2023/2024, suggesting improved handling of residues like starch by-products. Major food producer Almarai achieved a 21% rise in recycling rates, reflecting corporate initiatives to valorize waste. These developments, alongside new sustainable manufacturing policies outlined in the 2024 Industrial Development Report, reinforced the trend toward local processing and waste utilization.
