Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, production of starch-manufacture residues in the MENA region increased from 65.6 thousand tons to 84.2 thousand tons. This growth was supported by rising volumes of agricultural waste, particularly cotton residues, which expanded the raw material base. Increased attention to solid and organic waste management through awareness programs further stimulated processing activities.

Over the same period, imports fell dramatically from 183.4 thousand tons to 58.7 thousand tons, leading to a contraction in the total market size from 248.6 thousand tons to 137.0 thousand tons. The drop in imports was partially offset by higher domestic output, driven by expanded renewable energy projects and corporate recycling initiatives, such as Almarai's 21% rise in recycling rates in 2024. The fly ash market's valuation at $614.31 million in 2021 underscored the economic importance of industrial waste streams, while environmental challenges in disposing of olive oil waste highlighted ongoing processing needs.
