The Indian market for starch-manufacture residues expanded from 81 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 96.2 thousand tonnes in 2019. This growth was driven by a regulatory shift from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which since 2016 permitted the use of modified starches in processed foods under Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines, enabling new applications. Concurrently, rising urban snacking trends and demand from fast-moving consumer goods manufacturers increased consumption of convenience foods containing starch derivatives.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains and reduced demand from the hotel and restaurant sector, causing the market volume to contract sharply to 64.6 thousand tonnes. Subsequent recovery was supported by the expansion of the textile industry, a major consumer of modified starch for sizing, and continued investments in starch processing technology, which helped lift domestic market volume to 70.6 thousand tonnes by 2022.

A significant surge in production to 138.3 thousand tonnes occurred in 2023, fueled by major capacity expansions. Bluecraft Agro planned to become the largest modified starch manufacturer, while Cargill opened a new corn milling plant in Gwalior. However, a simultaneous jump in exports to 74.7 thousand tonnes diverted supply from the domestic market, reducing internal consumption to 64.4 thousand tonnes.

After two years of growth, India's production of starch-manufacture residues declined. In 2020, production reached 79 869 tonnes, down 7.0% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 22.8%, averaging an annual growth rate of 7.1%. The highest production volume was recorded in 2019 at 85 882 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase occurring in 2018 at 23.3%.

The market exhibited significant volatility during these years. Export volumes reached their lowest point in 2019 and peaked in 2020, showing a 3.9-fold difference between these two years. In 2020, India exported 20 199 tonnes of starch-manufacture residues, marking a sharp increase of 287.5% compared to 2019. The minimum export volume was recorded in 2019 at 5 213 tonnes, while the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 36.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Indonesia were the leading destinations for India's exports of starch-manufacture residues in volume terms. Vietnam accounted for 36.7% of exports, Bangladesh for 26.7%, and Indonesia for 12.6%. Together, these three countries represented 76.1% of total export flows.

The data shows irregular changes, reflecting a volatile market environment. Export values dropped to their lowest in 2019 and rose to their highest in 2020, with a 1.9-fold variation between these years. In 2020, the value of starch-manufacture residues exported from India reached 6 412 thousand US dollars, up 93.3% from the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 3 316 thousand US dollars, and the largest decline occurred in 2018 at 31.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Indonesia were the primary buyers of starch-manufacture residues from India in value terms. Bangladesh accounted for 31.9% of exports, Vietnam for 17.3%, and Indonesia for 16.5%. Collectively, these three markets represented 65.8% of total export value.

The maximum import volume was recorded in 2019 at 15 508 tonnes, and the largest increase occurred in the same year at 140.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Indonesia and China were the main sources for India's imports of starch-manufacture residues in volume terms, together accounting for 97.2% of total import flows. The remaining share was distributed among other markets.

In 2020, the value of starch-manufacture residues imported into India amounted to 1 663 thousand US dollars, down 65.8% from the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 4 863 thousand US dollars, and the largest increase occurred in the same year at 79.8%.
