The Ramadan period in 2020 further boosted vegetable consumption, contributing to the peak in that year.

A notable drop occurred in 2021, when market size fell to 217.7 thousand tons. Global and regional factors, including rising fuel prices and increased logistics costs, raised production expenses and constrained output. However, the market rebounded strongly in 2022 and continued to grow in 2023, surpassing 232 thousand tons. High prices for greenhouse vegetables led consumers to seek more affordable seasonal alternatives like spinach, and recurring Ramadan demand provided additional support for sales.

Spinach production in Turkey grew for the third year in a row. In 2020, Turkey produced 231.5 thousand tonnes of spinach, showing a slight increase of 0.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 4.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.4%.

Exports spinach to Turkey

Spinach exports from Turkey fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 174.2 tonnes, representing a 53.8% year-on-year decline. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 80.3%, which translates to an annualized decrease of 41.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main buyers of Turkish spinach were Bulgaria (30.5% of exports in volume), Romania (18.6%), and Germany (12.9%), together making up 62.1% of total exports in volume.
