Earlier Report Observations

The fresh spinach market in Southern Europe showed notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After a decline to 226.8 thousand tonnes in 2019, volume stabilized around 225 thousand tonnes in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated demand for frozen spinach, perceived as convenient and safe, supporting overall consumption.

A sharp recovery followed in 2021, with market volume jumping 14.7% to 258.5 thousand tonnes. This growth was driven by the continued expansion of the frozen and individual quick-frozen (IQF) segments, alongside rising consumer interest in organic and ready-to-eat spinach products. However, adverse climatic conditions in 2022 affected harvests, leading to a 10% drop in volume to 232.7 thousand tonnes, despite increased greenhouse cultivation area in Italy to compensate for production losses.

The market contracted further to 201.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. Throughout the period, investments in cold-chain logistics and quick-freezing technology helped maintain product quality, while consumer preference for packaged, pre-washed spinach and sustainable offerings influenced demand patterns.
