Earlier Report Observations
The market for fresh spinach in Poland, measured in volume, contracted from 10 263 t in 2018 to 7 288 t in 2023. This downward trend was interrupted by a temporary recovery to 8 993 t in 2021. In value terms, the market followed a similar pattern, falling from 20.6 million USD to 15.6 million USD over the six-year period, with a strong rebound in value also occurring in 2021.
The overall market decline was driven by a significant reduction in domestic production, which nearly halved from 7 470 t to 4 800 t. Imports grew from 3 499 t to 4 898 t, partially compensating for the lower local output, while exports expanded more than threefold from 706 t to 2 411 t, which further reduced the volume available for domestic consumption.
For 2024, import and export volumes continued their upward movement, reaching 5 255 t and 2 899 t respectively. Industry sources noted relevant factors for the period, including rising consumer health consciousness and the introduction of new supply options such as the Barbuda spinach variety by Seminis.
