The market for fresh or chilled carrots and turnips in Poland entered a phase of sustained contraction starting from 2018. Over the following six years, total market volume fell from 751.4 thousand tonnes to 600.6 thousand tonnes, representing a cumulative decline of over 150 thousand tonnes.

The downturn accelerated notably in 2021, when consumption dropped by 56.2 thousand tonnes or nearly 8% year-on-year. While the pace of decline slowed somewhat after 2021, the market continued to shrink each year, indicating persistent downward pressure on demand.

After declining for two consecutive years, carrot and turnip production in Poland rebounded in 2020. That year, output reached 681.0 thousand tonnes, showing only a slight variation from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 17.7%, translating to an average annual decline of 6.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 678.3 thousand tonnes, while the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 12.2% decrease.

Exports carrots and turnips from Poland

Following a two-year contraction, Poland's exports of carrots and turnips recovered in 2020. Export volume that year stood at 21,864 tonnes, remaining essentially unchanged from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 span, exports declined by 25.5%, averaging a 9.4% annual decrease. The export volume hit its lowest point in 2019 at 21,780 tonnes, with the most significant reduction occurring in 2018 at 25.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Slovakia, Romania, and Czechia were Poland's primary export markets for carrots and turnips by volume. Slovakia accounted for 25.7% of exports, Romania for 23.6%, and Czechia for 17.4%. Together, these three countries represented 66.8% of Poland's total carrot and turnip exports during this period.

After increasing for two years, the value of Poland's carrot and turnip exports declined in 2020. That year, exports totaled 9,308 thousand US dollars, representing an 18.5% decrease compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 timeframe, export value grew by 24.1%, equivalent to an average annual increase of 7.5%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 11,420 thousand US dollars, while the strongest growth occurred in 2018 with a 34.2% rise.

Between 2017 and 2020, Slovakia, Romania, and Czechia emerged as Poland's main carrot and turnip export markets by value. Slovakia accounted for 24.5% of export value, Romania for 24.1%, and Czechia for 16.5%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 59,202 tonnes, while the most substantial increase occurred in 2018 with a 47.7% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany were Poland's main sources of carrot and turnip imports by volume. The Netherlands supplied 49.1% of imports, Italy 23.0%, and Germany 8.2%. Together, these three countries accounted for 80.3% of Poland's total carrot and turnip imports during this timeframe.
