From 2018 to 2020, Peru's soybean oilcake market depended overwhelmingly on imports, with Bolivia supplying over 80% of the volume consumed by the country's poultry and livestock sectors. This steady flow of imports supported a gradual expansion of the market to 1.36 million tons by 2020.

The market volume jumped significantly to 1.5 million tons in 2021. However, in 2022, logistical blockades and social protests in southern Peru disrupted overland supply routes from Bolivia, creating supply constraints that contributed to a contraction of the market to 1.39 million tons and drove up import prices.

Faced with ongoing border disruptions, importers pivoted in 2023, moving 86% of shipments to maritime routes. This logistical adaptation, alongside Argentina's growing role as a supplier—partially displacing Bolivia—enabled the market to recover to 1.43 million tons.

Peru's soybean oilcake production has grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 6 937 tons, representing a 4.6% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 10.5%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.4%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 6 246 tons. That same year saw the smallest decline of 0.5%, while 2019 experienced the largest increase of 6.2%.

During the 2017–2020 period, Bolivia, the United States, and Paraguay dominated Peru's import structure in value terms. Bolivia led with 58.4% of imports, followed by the United States at 18.4% and Paraguay at 17.8%. Together, these three countries represented 94.5% of total import flows.
