Earlier Report Observations
Nigeria's soybean oilcake production rose from 408.6 thousand tons in 2018 to 535.1 thousand tons in 2020, with the market size expanding from 398.5 to 494.8 thousand tons. This growth was underpinned by the ongoing mechanization of soybean farming and processing, especially in Benue State, which contributes roughly 45% of the country's soybean harvest, enhancing the feedstock available for oilcake production.
Production jumped to 549.8 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 613.7 thousand tons in 2022, a surge directly linked to the entry of new large-scale processing capacity. The key driver was the commissioning of Olam Agri's 350 thousand ton per year soybean crushing plant in Kwara State, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, supported by the government's Anchor Borrowers Program which increased soybean supplies from local farmers. This new capacity enabled a sharp increase in exports, which reached 112.1 thousand tons in 2021.
By 2023, production climbed to 645.3 thousand tons while the domestic market size stabilized at 507.0 thousand tons. The higher output was channeled into foreign markets, with exports rising to 141.2 thousand tons, aided by a naira devaluation that made Nigerian soybean oilcake more price-competitive internationally.
