The production process typically involves mechanical pressing and solvent extraction, with oil-cake being a joint product alongside groundnut oil.

A severe contraction occurred in 2022, with market volume falling to 463 thousand tons. Partial recovery followed in 2023 to 479 thousand tons, aided by the Nigerian government's ban on groundnut oil imports which encouraged domestic processing, and by growing livestock industry demand for protein-rich oil-cake as animal feed.
