The sorghum market in Togo experienced moderate growth from 2018 to 2023, with production supported by government initiatives to enhance agricultural financing. The launch of the Agricultural Financing Incentive Mechanism (Mifa) in June 2018 facilitated credit access for sorghum value chains, contributing to a market volume increase to 282.6 thousand tons in 2019. Market volume then stabilized around 277-279 thousand tons in 2020-2021, during which the Togolese Agricultural Research Institute introduced new sorghum varieties to improve yields after a weaker harvest, and the government opened cereal stocks to address price fluctuations.

From 2022 onward, market expansion accelerated, reaching 300.0 thousand tons in 2023. This growth was aided by the development of soybean processing and organic farming, which encouraged sorghum as an associated crop. Furthermore, ongoing reforms to facilitate cross-border trade and digitalize procedures eased access to agricultural inputs and improved marketing efficiency for cereals, directly supporting the rise in sorghum production and market volume.

Following two years of growth, sorghum production in Togo experienced a decline. In 2020, production reached 279.1 thousand tonnes, marking a 1.2% decrease compared to the previous year. The peak production occurred in 2019 at 282.6 thousand tonnes, which represented a 1.9% increase from the year before.
