The sorghum market volume in Bangladesh fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023, from 4 117 t down to 3 666 t in 2019, then rising sharply to 7 640 t in 2021 before falling to 5 815 t in 2023. Domestic production remained very low throughout, never exceeding 87 t annually.

Sorghum is a minor crop in Bangladesh, where agricultural policy focuses on staple grains like rice and wheat. The only recommended cultivar, BARI Jowar-1, limits production expansion. Globally, climate change has increased interest in drought-tolerant crops such as sorghum, but this has not led to significant policy shifts or market development in Bangladesh.
