Earlier Report Observations

Sorghum market volume in Côte d'Ivoire expanded steadily from 65,741 t in 2018 to 72,503 t in 2020. This growth was underpinned by the National Center for Agronomic Research's programs that disseminated improved sorghum varieties and enhanced farming techniques in the northern production regions.

Following the peak, production dipped slightly in 2021, though market volume was cushioned by a spike in imports. By 2022, output recovered to 73,345 t, lifting market size to 73,718 t. During this period, the market saw increased commercialization with multiple producers and traders entering, while cross-border grain flows were disrupted by export bans in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, tightening supply and influencing prices.

Production dropped to 65,356 t in 2023, bringing market volume down to 65,978 t. Into 2024, market supply improved with the release of the 2023/2024 harvest, but regional trade remained constrained by insecurity and persistent export restrictions.
