From 2018 to 2020, Bangladesh's paddy rice market volume grew from 54 651 thousand tonnes to 56 062 thousand tonnes. This expansion was supported by the introduction of new rice varieties adapted to local conditions and state-backed subsidies for farmers, which raised production. In 2020, government food security measures and the adoption of digital crop monitoring technologies helped offset pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, allowing output to increase.

Post-pandemic, the market continued to rise, reaching 60 605 thousand tonnes in 2023. The launch of large processing facilities with advanced technology in 2021, along with greater investments in logistics infrastructure and strengthened cooperation between state and private companies, enhanced processing capacity and supported further market growth.

After two years of decline, Bangladesh's paddy rice exports rebounded. In 2020, exports reached 180 tonnes, marking a 52.3% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 51%, with a compound annual growth rate of -21.2%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 118 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 51.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Saudi Arabia were the top contributors to Bangladesh's paddy rice exports in volume, accounting for 19.6%, 18.4%, and 12.3% of total flows, respectively. Together, they represented 50.2% of all exports.
