Earlier Report Observations

The sorghum market in North Macedonia expanded significantly from 29 tonnes in 2018 to nearly 50 tonnes in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by rising imports, which increased more than fourfold over the period, while domestic production remained stable at around 35-36 tonnes per year.

After minimal exports in 2018 and 2019, external sales ceased entirely from 2020 onward. At the same time, import volumes surged, jumping from 3.7 tonnes in 2019 to 6.0 tonnes in 2020 and further to 11.0 tonnes in 2022. This shift turned the country into a net importer, with imports accounting for a growing share of total market supply.

By 2023, imports reached 14.3 tonnes, contributing to a market size of 49.9 tonnes. The stable domestic production base, combined with consistently rising imports, supported the overall market expansion throughout the six-year period.
