Earlier Report Observations

The sorghum market in Rwanda opened at 200 thousand tonnes in 2018, coinciding with the launch of the fourth Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA 4), a comprehensive policy to modernize farming through innovation, productivity, and market development. After a dip to 186 thousand tonnes in 2019, the market recovered to 197 thousand tonnes in 2020, supported by rising demand for sorghum as animal feed from the country's growing dairy sector.

Market volume sustained its upward trajectory, reaching 212 thousand tonnes in 2021 and climbing to a peak of 234 thousand tonnes in 2022. A moderate correction followed in 2023, bringing the market to 219 thousand tonnes, a period during which the government continued to invest in agricultural infrastructure and Rwanda registered a significant increase in horticulture exports.

Moving into 2024, the strategic environment for sorghum continued to be shaped by the ongoing PSTA 4 framework, a national goal to increase production of key crops by 50%, and the development of the Gabiro agribusiness hub—a public-private partnership aimed at boosting food and commercial crop output in the Eastern region.
