The market for silkworm cocoons in Vietnam expanded strongly from 2018 to 2023, with production volume rising from 8 145 t to 17 727 t. The initial growth phase saw a sharp increase in 2019, followed by continued expansion in 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic. This resilience was supported by local agricultural cooperatives and agencies that began providing technical assistance, supplying silkworm eggs, and building sustainable sericulture chains to help farmers maintain and increase output.

From 2021 onward, the recovery of international silk exports, particularly after pandemic restrictions eased, lifted cocoon prices and encouraged further production. Improved availability of imported high-quality silkworm eggs also enhanced yields. In 2022, demand from India's reopened silk market and stable operation of domestic reeling mills kept the market growing, albeit at a slower pace. The opening of a large-scale reeling factory in Lam Ha district in 2023 created an additional surge in demand for cocoons, contributing to another year of solid volume growth.

Vietnam's silkworm cocoon production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 14 937 tonnes, marking a sharp 26.0% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production surged by 103.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 26.6%.
