Earlier Report Observations

The European shelled walnut market volume fluctuated between 2018 and 2023. It began at 211.6 thousand tonnes in 2018, a year when reduced cultivation area and output in Italy strengthened the country's role as a net importer. Market volume then fell to 186.4 thousand tonnes in 2019 and stabilized around 183 thousand tonnes in 2020, before a sharp rebound in 2021 drove it to 239.2 thousand tonnes.

In 2022, a trade war between the United States and Chile increased competitive pressure on French walnut growers, though the overall European market volume remained nearly unchanged at 240.4 thousand tonnes. By 2023, the market receded to 231.9 thousand tonnes. During that same year, Italian consumption showed marked growth, with companies investing in innovative products and launching projects to connect consumers with the local supply chain.
